Friday Product Review

Posted in Safety/Defense with tags , , , , , on November 6, 2009 by ministerofdefense

Hey everybody,  this your Minister of Defense Xavier Smith with another product review for your safety.  The holidays are upon us and this is when people get stupid!

Your safety note is this:

  1. keep your eyes peeled for suspicious people.  People will take advantage of those who “look” like victims.  Having the right mental mind-set will go a long way towards sending out the message that you are aware!  If you need help with that, we have the solution for you!
  2. Never carry too many bags at once!  If you have way too many things in your hands, you are presenting yourself as a target for those looking to run off with your booty.
  3. Be mindful of what is about to take place when transitioning from one place to another.  For example, take a deep breath and look around for anything that may cause alarm or anything or anybody that is out-of-place.  Most attackers are looking for someone who is not paying attention to their surroundings.  That can NOT be you

Now on to the product review.

When it comes to non-lethal personal safety and protection, one of my favorite products are the personal alarms.

Travel Alarm Got My Defense Gear.com

Travel Alarm w/sensor

The one you see to your left is my pick for price and function.  It has a sensor that will let you know when you are too close and the sound it emits hurts the ears.  In self-defense, it is all about becoming an inconvenient target, and this inexpensive devise will help you do just that!

For those looking for a little bit more, may I suggest the Taser!

Taser Gun

Got My Defense Gear.com

This is used when you want distance between you and your attacker.  There are two “fish-hook” style prongs that shoot out from the gun that will load your aggressor up with electricity!   OUCH!!!

Well there you have it.  My pick for this week. Better to be prepared and not need it, than be unprepared and need to use it right?  To your safety.  This is your Minster of Defense and I am signing off!

A Defensive Stance Against Domestic Violence

Posted in Safety/Defense, Self Protection on October 29, 2009 by ministerofdefense

Greetings to all, this is your Minster of Defense with a message on domestic violence!  Let me just give you my position on this.  Domestic violence is just wrong!  There is NEVER a time that domestic violence should be accepted as the norm.  It seems every time I turn on the television, I see reports of people being victimized at home.  The home is a place of refuge, not a place you wonder if you are going to get hurt or live to see tomorrow!  Here is the bottom line, we can do something about this.

One of my tasks as a self-defense consultant, is to instill confidence to a point that my clients realize they do not have become victims!  The point of self-defense is more about being an inconvenient target and not about fighting toe-to-toe and blow for blow.  With regard to domestic violence, awareness is the key.  You have to be aware of what is going on around you!  Turning up your awareness and listening to your internal voice when it tells you there is something wrong is just one of the tools that can be used to keep a bad situations from getting even worse!

Now this not a lesson on the how-to’s of domestic violence.  This is about the fact that domestic violence in all it’s forms, is wrong!  There is absolutely no reason for it!

Some of the other tools that can be employed are what I like to call empowerment/protection tools.  Products like tasers, stun guns, pepper sprays go a long way towards helping empowerment when one is just tired of taking of what no one deserves!

Well I want to thank you for reading this post.  I hope this sparks you to do something about it.  This is your Minister of Defense, and I am out!

Pepper Spray VS. The Kubotan

Posted in Safety/Defense, Self Protection with tags , , , , , on October 24, 2009 by ministerofdefense

Good Morning all,  This is your Minister of Defense signing on and in this post I will give you my thoughts on two of the most popular self defense products, pepper spray and the key chain kubotan.  I get many questions as to which product is best or which one I suggest.  I thought it would be best to share my thoughts here so you can share with your friends and family.

Let’s cover the pepper sprays.  First of all, the benefit to having this sleek looking inexpensive product is that it can be used at a distance.  This is important for those who have moved past the days of having something to prove and now chose to do things without as much effort.  If you are into keyring type pepper sprays, may I suggest this one because you get more bang for your buck and it is not too obvious.  They also work well on animals, for those living close to the mountains.

Moving right along, let’s cover the kubatons.  Now these are for those that don’t mind getting a little close and personal, for there is no spray involved that will afford you distance like the pepper sprays.  If you are into causing maximum pain without expending  much effort, then this is the weapon I would suggest for you!  Although these do the job just as well.  It boils down to personal preference.  The applications for this product are many but here is the bottom line.  With a little knowledge on how to use this, you can turn yourself into an inconvenient target, which is your primary objective in self defense.  We are here to help.  So which one is better, you may ask?  Well that all depends on what you feel will work best for your particular situation.

I hope this was helpful for you, as you can never have too much information when it comes to self protection and the protection of your loved ones.  Feel free to leave us some comments.   This is your Minister of Defense and I am singing off.

The Philosophy of Self Defense

Posted in Safety/Defense with tags , , , , on October 4, 2009 by ministerofdefense

Greetings everyone, this is your Minister of Defense with a note on the philosophy behind self defense.  This was posted in an effort to de-mystify some of the perception of self defense, or what some might call martial arts training.

Let’s start by learning what self defense is not.  It’s not about physical self defense lessons, (although we would love to have you take a class.)  Self defense should not be intimidating, for it is something that we should all posses in my opinion.  As a self defense instructor, I am perplexed as to the rather cavalier attitude some have about learning basic self defense techniques.  Thinking that nothing will ever happen to them because they are living in a gated community or have a husband with a martial arts background.  Furthermore, self defense is not about complicated martial arts moves that take years to memorize.  Moreover, self defense is not about buying self defense weapons or products thinking that just because you have pepper spray, stun guns, or Tasers, you will be automatically protected.  These weapons and products do serve as a good deterrent, but there is one component that is missing.

Without subscribing to the correct mindset, all the martial arts moves, and self defense lessons, and self defense products in the world will be of no use to you when it counts!  Now let’s talk about what self defense is and should be.  Self defense starts with the matter located in between the ears…the mind.  Some of us are more timid by nature, as such, learning the basics of self preservation either through, martial arts training, or self defense lessons, should really be considered.  Self defense is also about having enough confidence to decide from the start that you will not be a victim.  Knowing that we are all forms of energy, it is up to you to decide what type of vibes you are broadcasting to the world. In nature, the predator will pick out the weak based on posture, and it is no different with humans.

For the most part, people with less than honorable intentions will prey on those who do not display confidence versus someone who walks with confidence and looks others straight in the eye.  So what type of person are you?  One that knows you need to do something about having the correct mindset, or are you a pro-active person that decided to no longer be a victim?  At Xcellent Solutions LLC, we have a solution for you.  The question is what are you going to do about your safety and self defense for you and your family?

I am sure you will have questions.  If so, please visit http://ICanDefendMyself.com for more information.  Feel free to leave a comment.  As always, we thank you for reading.  Pass it on.

When Sexual Assault Happens To You!

Posted in Safety/Defense with tags , , , , , , on September 19, 2009 by ministerofdefense

This is your Minister Of Defense, Xavier Smith coming to you from a place of concern.

Did you hear about the young woman grabbed from behind while taking out the trash?  Well watch this video just in case you missed it, and then we will talk about it.

When speaking to a group or working with clients one-on-one, I mention that in a perfect world, my job should not exist.  However, its incidents like this one that speak to the fact that the world is NOT perfect!  As such, we need to get serious about preserving our own peace and protecting our loved ones.  This violation took place in a gated community, where most would think it is safe, just like the lady being interviewed.  It saddens me to know that people consider self defense less important than say, getting their nails done or shopping for clothes.  Especially when things like this are happening on a daily basis.  This occurence just happened to make the news.  Just imagine all the other incidents that go unreported where someone get hurt or worse?  When are we going to wake up and take control of our lives and stop being victims?

In think about that story, what do you think you would have done differently to perhaps avoid that situation?  I ask because the biggest obstacle I run across is the thought that something like this will never happen.  That only happens to other people.  Well I am here to tell you, that other person is you!  It’s not a matter of “if” but a matter of “when!”  So let’s be prepared when you are met with aggression or violence.

My hat is off for the young lady in the story who decided to fight back.  Although she did sustain injury, the alternative could have been much worse had she not fought back.

This post is not about selling anything or using this event to increase enrollment rates, however, it is about getting you to wake up and do something about creating a better world for yourself and those you love.  Thank you in advance for becoming pro-active.

This is your Minister Of Defense, signing off.

Some Safety Tips From the Minister of Defense

Posted in Safety/Defense with tags , , , , , , on August 23, 2009 by ministerofdefense

Greetings to all.  This is your Minister Of Defense, Xavier Smith with information you can use to stay safe.  Most of you that know me understand that I teach and instruct self defense, but did you know I started this company with the idea of providing instruction to real estate agents?  Yes, it is true, because there is a need for real estate agents to know how to protect themselves when doing their job.  The problem is, Realtors don’t have much time to go to a class, not to mention learning things they will not use.  Hence one of the reasons I made my services mobile.  For the ultimate in convenience!

Today I wanted to talk about one of my favorite self-defense weapons for Realtors.  Its called the Kubotan.  It is a light weight device that attaches to your key chain.  Some are made with a point on the end, and the more aggressive models are made with protrusions that come through the fingers to allow you to strike your attacker with maximum impact.

Now let me give you five reasons why this is one of my favorite weapons.

  1. When use on the vulnerable parts of the body (top of the hand, forearm, ears, eyes, nose, or throat) you do not have to exert much energy to achieve maximum results.
  2. When you deploy this weapon, you do not have to worry about the wind blowing blowing back in your face like you do when using pepper spray.
  3. The sight of this weapon makes people think twice about causing you harm, especially when you present yourself as a confident person, and not a victim.
  4. They are very inexpensive.  With everyone feeling the pinch of the economy, this is one of the least expensive ways to keep yourself protected.
  5. You do not need any permits to carry this weapon.  Unlike carrying a concealed weapon, you can have this in plain sight and if it’s on your key chain, you will be able to get to quickly since you will likely have your keys in hand.

Of course, there is only so much I can cover in a article, but here is the bottom line.  We want you to be able to stay alive to continue doing your job of real estate.  Before I sign off, let me remind you to never put your commission check in front of your safety.

Here is to your safety.

I Always Feel Like People Are Watching Me

Posted in HelloTxt, Safety/Defense with tags , , , , , , , , on August 19, 2009 by ministerofdefense

Hello all. This is your minister of defense Xavier Smith with some food for thought.

Have you ever just taken a moment to observe other people? The next time you are out and about, I want you to notice how many people are deeply engrossed in whatever they are doing, they never notice what is happening in their surroundings. It is sad but true. Most people become victims to sexual assault or other crimes simply because they were not paying attention to what is going on around them. We don’t have to let this happen. We can do something about being a victim.

As a on site self defense instructor, It is my job to make people more aware of the environment they are in. Chances are, by paying attention to what’s going on around you and not trying to make that phone call while you are walking to your car, you can avoid a harmful situation. One of the first habits you should get into is getting into the right mindset before transitioning from one place to another. You should just take a deep breath, relax and understand what’s about to take place before just walking out to the car with no plan in place in case something were to happen. You should also know to walk in a assertive manner (not aggressive) and keep the head up and make enough eye contact with other to let then know that you have noticed them.

The bottom line is we can all do our part by being aware of what’s going on around us and let those evil doers know there are no victims here!

This is your minister of defense, Xavier Smith, signing off. Be safe!
